Our school has a strong record of pastoral support. However, it has not always been possible to give the more in-depth therapeutic support for children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences or those who have attachment disorder. On occasions, staff have found it difficult to look beyond behaviour exhibited by a child in order to see what the underlying cause for these behaviours has been. Play therapy allows for an assessment at the start of treatment, with both school and home, in order to start to unpick a child's needs. There have been many positive effects of play therapy within school, which have resulted in improved behaviours in the classroom and improved relationships and behaviours at home. Addressing the therapeutic needs of a child, means that they are more likely to be able to move through school, regulating their own behaviours. I would highly recommend play therapy to help children with more complex social and emotional needs.
